Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often. |
Superficially, Box has a lot in common with Sam's previous album releases; she's handled the majority of the songwriting chores, and co-produced the record with her brother Pete Brown. However, in overall cohesiveness it represents a major step forward from those works (which isn't to knock them; let's face it, how many artists ever really manage to evolve their sound and improve it?)
The sound of Box is distinctly unfashionable; I can't remember when I heard a Hammond organ used so effectively. What blends it all together is Sam's voice, a highly effective tool which soars over lyrics that could be empty or pretentious and imbue them with meaning and feeling.
God, listen to me, I sound like a pretentious rock critic. The simple version is: I bought the album, I like it, I'll be listening to it a bit. There you have it.
