Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.
Guldet Blev Till Sand
In 1997, this is as close as I can get to a new ABBA single. 'Guldet Blev Till Sand' (which translates as 'The Gold Turned Into Sand') is the second single from 'Kristina från Duvemåla', the musical written by Benny and Bjorn which premiered in 1995. We had to wait nearly a year for the release of the soundtrack (on 3 CDs), and then nearly another six months before this track came out. It was preceded by another single, the equally brilliant 'Du Maste Finnas', but it's this second track that's been a bigger commercial success in Sweden.
Naturally, I think it's been worth the wait in any case. It's not anything like an ABBA single, except in the sense that it's a brilliant piece of music, immaculately sung and perfectly produced. Even though it's in Swedish (a language I am going to have to learn one of these days), the emotion it carries transcends any linguistic barriers on my side. When the musical eventually gets translated into English, this song is going to be huge. If I keep going I'll just begin gibbering, so I'll stop here.
