Single Of The Week
Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.

I'm Just A Girl
Bachelor Girl
GOTH 02022

I've had a soft spot for Bachelor Girl ever since their insanely catchy debut 'Buses And Trains' (which deserved to be a hit in the UK as well, but oddly enough flopped completely). My enthusiasm for them was cemented when I caught them twice as support act on Eurythmics' recent tour; matching up to Annie & Dave's live performance standard is a tough call, but they more than managed it.

After what seems an eternity, ver Girl have finally released the first single from their new album. When I spotted this in HMV, the title was a bit of a worry. Not only did it partly reference the band's name (which is a messy strategy, as Living In A Box and Talk Talk will tell you), but it also kept reminding me of that No Doubt song, along with shades of Madonna.

The song itself is nothing like that. A lyrical first cousin to 'Buses And Trains', it continues the traditional Bachelor Girl sound but with a more modern sheen. Maybe they spent the royalties from the first album updating their home studio. It's a song that grows on you, though, while the other new track, 'Falling', hints that the new album will feature even more diversions into unexpected sounds.

The cover art for the CD is also pretty impressive, sporting a range of custom products and cards made out in the name of lead singer Tania Doko. The Zone Out pass is very obviously based on a Melbourne tram pass, though.
