I'm going to avoid talking about this week's crop of Oscar nominations, because plenty of other people have already pointed out how dull and predictable they are. Instead, I want to focus on the companion movie awards that were also announced this week: the Razzies, which go to the worst movies of the year.I have no beef with The Avengers scoring mega-nominations, or Burn Hollywood Burn: An Alan Smithee Film getting heaped with ridicule. But I have to draw the line at the number of nominations achieved by the Spice Girls' cinematic epic, Spiceworld.
The movie -- which, as I've noted before on Gusworld, I found an entirely enjoyable romp -- scored the following noms:
In a year that gave us Godzilla, I see no excuse for this sort of behaviour. No-one is claiming that Spiceworld is a Citizen Kane-level classic, but compared to most of the turkey projects associated with rock stars (remember Cool As Ice, anyone), it was a complete masterpiece. The insult is doubled when you realise that the obvious shoo-in candidate for Worst Song, 'When You Believe', wan't even nominated.
Anyway, take my advice: Ignore the Razzies and rent it soon!
